Message to Principals
You are the Gatkeepers of Opportunity
My name is Shaun Smith, and I founded In-Phase Kids because I have personally experienced the power of sports to change a life.
I grew up in a single-parent household. Like many young people, I faced challenges that could have easily sent me down the wrong path. Sports became my outlet, my motivation, and my teacher.
My coaches became father figures.
Sports kept me out of trouble.
When school wasn't always exciting, sports motivated me to earn good grades.
As a shy and socially awkward child, sports taught me how to communicate, build relationships, and believe in myself.
Sports taught me discipline.
Sports taught me teamwork.
Sports taught me how to handle adversity.
Sports taught me how to lose with dignity and win with humility.
Most importantly, sports taught me perseverance—the belief that when things get difficult, you keep going.
The reality is that my story is not unique.
Millions of adults can point to a coach who changed their life, a team that gave them purpose, or a sport that helped them find confidence.
What is becoming increasingly rare, however, is access to those opportunities.
When I was a child, if you wanted to play sports, you simply played.
Today, if you want to play, you often have to pay.
The gap between those who have access to sports opportunities and those who do not continues to grow.
Meanwhile, the students who could benefit the most from sports are often the very students being left behind.
At In-Phase Kids, we believe talent is universal, but opportunity is not.
That is why our mission is to increase access to sports for all children—not just those whose families can afford private leagues, select teams, club programs, or specialized training.
We are not focused on trophies.
We are not focused on rankings.
We are focused on young people.
Because sports change lives.
Sports create confidence.
Sports create leaders.
Sports create belonging.
Sports create hope.
And sometimes, sports create a completely different future for a child.
Why I Am Reaching Out to Principals
As principals, you are more than school leaders—you are opportunity creators.
Every day, you make decisions that impact the lives of hundreds of students. You decide which programs gain access to your campus. You decide which partnerships are worth exploring. You decide which opportunities become available to your families.
In many ways, you are the gatekeepers of opportunity.
That is a tremendous responsibility, and one I deeply respect.
Because of that, I am not asking you to immediately approve a program.
I am not asking for a long-term commitment.
I am simply asking for an opportunity to determine whether your families would find value in what we do.
One introduction from a principal can create opportunities for dozens—or even hundreds—of students.
A Simple Request
If our mission resonates with you, I would greatly appreciate an introduction to your PTA President, PTA Board, or parent leadership team.
Why?
Because parents should have a voice in this conversation.
Before any program is brought onto a campus, it makes sense to understand whether families are interested in additional sports opportunities for their children.
The PTA already has relationships with the families we hope to serve.
They understand the needs of the community.
They know the parents.
They know the students.
And they can help determine whether a program like In-Phase Kids would be valuable to your campus.
A simple introduction allows us to listen, answer questions, gather feedback, and determine whether there is genuine parent interest before asking for anything more.
The Opportunity
Imagine a student who has never played a sport because their family couldn't afford it.
Imagine a student struggling with confidence who discovers a talent they never knew they had.
Imagine a student who finds mentorship, belonging, discipline, and motivation through athletics.
Those opportunities often begin with a single decision.
A principal opening a door.
A PTA willing to have a conversation.
A community choosing to invest in its children.
That is all we are asking for.
An opportunity to have the conversation.
An opportunity to hear from parents.
An opportunity to determine whether together we can create more access, more participation, and more opportunities for students.
Because every child deserves the chance to experience the life-changing benefits of sports.
And sometimes all it takes is one leader willing to open the door.
